The Chronology of a Cursed World
In the ancient days of Evernight, then known as the planet Midia, a warm
sun illuminated a golden age of commerce and culture. The six great
nations grew and reached all the glories of a civilized world, but a
sinister plan brought terrible chaos to the Golden Age, and the journey
to darkness began.
One thousand years of prosperity decayed into global madness in the year 991,
when the unspeakable form of Bork, an ageless and unholy entity from
beyond the bounds of reason, rose from the shadowy seas of Midia. This
terrible bane was brought from its timeless watery slumber by one
twisted mortal sorcerer, a student of the arcane arts who learned of the
immense supernatural power stored in the six moons of Evernight: Prime,
Sprok, Ember, Psidelica, Gigan, and Algus. This sorcerer was known as
Nergal the Mad.
Only the distant minds of the Gods know the insidious reasons for
Nergal’s actions, but every soul on Evernight suffered when Nergal’s
heinous master rose from his murky resting-place to devour and destroy
every trace of the Golden Age. Though Nergal himself was one of the
first victims of this abomination, his effect on the destiny of Midia
had taken its toll, and now only a sorcerer of greater power could
rescue this small planet from a fate more terrible than any madman’s
nightmare.
As Bork’s hated form lumbered without direction, bringing
rotten death to all that its gangrenous tentacles touched, a young girl
in the remote nation of Thrin was undergoing a ceremony as old as Midia
itself. Her bloodline was prophesied to rise to the defense of this
small world in its darkest hour and she was the apex of that bloodline.
Her name was K’Ar Tuf.
The cosmic forces that had woven the world of Midia from the dust of
space became the tools of young K’Ar Tuf’s power, and as she grew, and
the menace of Bork approached, destiny filled the air with a thick
tension. As the prophesy had foreseen, K’Ar Tuf’s natural ability to
harness arcane and sorcerous powers was without peer. By the time of
reckoning, as the epic conflict between her mortal form and the bony
hulk of her unholy nemesis drew nigh, K’Ar Tuf mastered Midia’s lunar
power with the aid of an ancient relic called The Black Between.
At last the great duel began. It was the year 1006 when at last Bork and
K’Ar Tuf met to decide the fate of Midia. For ten days their fury tore
the stones from the ground and boiled the waters to steam. The unholy
form of the God lashed and coiled with rage while K’Ar Tuf channeled
power unimagined through the strange, shadowy prongs of the Between. On
the eleventh day, Bork’s fate seemed imminent and the prophesy promised
to come true. But who can say what powers shape the truth of foresight
or the certainty of the future for in Bork, god of all that is meant to
never be, the strength for one last effort remained. In a final
convulsion of hate, Bork entangled K’Ar Tuf in his labyrinth of
tentacles and leaped from the surface of Midia across the dome of the
sky and into the glowing sun. A cataclysmic explosion more furious and
destructive nature than the world had ever known turned the sun to dust, and the planet Midia
fell into endless shadow.
It is said The Black Between was blasted into six pieces by the force of
the sun’s destruction, casting these shards of power across the face of a
world now known as Evernight.
For the next millennium the unrelenting darkness infected even the most
wise of mortals with fear and madness. The six great nations, which at
one time had flown the banners of a golden age, now decayed into ruin
and chaos. But deep within the cold earth of Evernight, an ancient
energy stirred the disintegrated corpse of K’Ar Tuf to resurrection. How
her mortal frame could return after its fiery demise none can say…but
once again the sandaled foot of the Queen of Mystery trod upon the
ground. It is surmised that dire vengeance, raw and brutal, re-animated
K’Ar Tuf’s supernatural power. That vengeance would write the next page
in the legend of Evernight.
Searching for a means to reassemble The Black Between and destroy Bork
for time eternal, the Queen of Mystery tapped the very elements of
Evernight for every scarcity of strength. Her mystic reach extended to
the core of the most remote mountains, to the depths of the darkest
waters, and beyond the burning earth and forgotten lands of the
long-dead Golden Age. From these places of power she summoned a race of
demigods: The Forms.
From gaseous pools of chanting light The Forms emerged, each a towering
monster of immense power. But before K’Ar Tuf could assemble her
supernatural avengers and gather their wits against her vile enemy,
their otherworldly wills defied her mortal control. Soon untold numbers
of Forms walked Evernight unchecked. The spell out of control and the
plan turned disaster, K’Ar Tuf could only struggle to lead a few loyal
Forms to victory over their rebellious brethren. For two centuries it
was so.
With the Black Between still lost to the inky wilderness, no decisive power
could bring Evernight under control. Forms warred across plain and
mountain range as the Gods looked on. At last, whether by destiny or
chance, the war of the Forms took the life of K’Ar Tuf in the Battle of
Thrin. Since her death, only a chosen few have dared to harness the
Forms’ power, and even fewer know of the Black Between’s
existence hidden away in the furthest corners of the world.
Now, a new prophecy tells of a final reckoning. The war of the Forms
shall fracture the world, and an ageless God will descend to bring his
followers their final deliverance. Who this God is, and what mighty
chosen one will lead the forms to recover the Black Between in his name,
is not known.
Welcome to Evernight, chosen one.
